Share The Street was born out of concern for the safety of our city's children following a crash that killed two pre-schoolers walking with their class on a city sidewalk.

Two years after the tragic deaths of four-year-old Hayley Ng and three-year-old Diego Martinez legislators closed a loophole in New York's current law that allows a driver who has caused injury or death to avoid punishment. This new law ensures that "drivers who act in a manner that endangers or would be likely to endanger a pedestrian or cyclist thereby causing physical injury or death shall be guilty of a traffic infraction. Punishment could include a fine, a term of imprisonment of up to 15 days and/or the participation in a motor vehicle accident prevention course."
